Martha Jean Dunn

Martha led a full and active life with her friends, family, and Loki, her husky mix dog. She enjoyed skiing, camping, hiking, biking, and kayaking in natural settings, first in the Hudson River Valley of New York, then Anchorage, Alaska and western Pennsylvania.

Martha had wide and varied interests. In addition to the above hobbies, she also enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, cooking, and being a judge at the college level for the National Gymnastics League.  She worked on the New York Times crossword with an ink pen, and gave a sly smile when others suggested a pencil and eraser. She never needed the eraser!

When her mother required assistance Martha moved to McKean, PA in 2020 with her dog, Loki. She became active in the community and made good friends there, enjoying time at the Erie Symphony along with her athletic outdoor endeavors. She continued her passion as a gymnastic judge, raised bees, had a prolific garden, and in general embraced the rural life.

Martha is preceded in passing by her father, William R. Dunn (1992), and her mother, Jean Sturtevant Dunn (2024). She is she survived by her brother, Thomas S. and his wife, Leigh Harmon Dunn along with various cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Patricia B. Korcheck

Patricia B. Korcheck (née Bishop) of Mentor, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 9, 2025, with her two daughters by her side. She was born in Cleveland on July 12, 1946 to Ralph and Margaret Bishop (née Segreto) and graduated from Hoban Dominican High School. She attended St. John College where she earned an education degree in 1967. In 1970, Pat met the love of her life, Pete, at a Halloween party while both were graduate students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The story goes that Pete asked her to marry him four days later on his birthday but she said, “not yet.” They were engaged a few months later on Valentine’s Day and said “YES” on April 8, 1972, remaining devoted to one another for 30 years until Pete’s death in 2002.

Pat began her teaching career in Illinois and also taught in the Cleveland Public Schools. Starting in the 1980s, she taught briefly at Sterling Morton, and later spent many years at Brentmoor Elementary in Mentor. Her students adored her, and even as adults, would lovingly recall their time in her classroom.

Pat had a reverence for nature and wildlife, especially enjoying time at the Holden Arboretum or in her backyard among the “dear deer” and the birds. She was always up for an adventure and had a childlike curiosity, appreciation, and wonder for the world and every human being she met. She loved to talk to virtually everyone, celebrating successes and providing support on bad days, whether you were the grocery store clerk she’d just met, a plumber in her home doing repairs, her new mailman, or one of her many life-long friends. Pat felt deeply connected to the parish of St. Cecilia’s (Cleveland), where she grew up and was later married, and where she continued to be involved until its closing in 2010. A long-time parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption in Mentor, her faith was unwavering and she continually sought to enhance her spiritual life through volunteer work, retreats, creative pursuits, prayer, and reading, especially Mary Oliver and Thomas Merton. Although she wasn’t Irish, she unabashedly pretended she was, traveling multiple times to Ireland and always yearning to return.

Pat was dearly loved and appreciated by friends from the many worlds she was a part of – her church communities, her neighborhood, her teaching, and her volunteer work. But it was her identity as a mother and grandmother (Gramma or “G-Maw”) that filled her with the greatest joy. For over a decade, she proudly and regularly drove out to Iowa to visit her grandson, making the trip alone and in one day.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell “Pete” Korcheck; parents, Ralph and Margaret Bishop; her brother, Ralph W. Bishop Jr.; and mother-in-law, Antoinette Korcheck. She will be missed forever by her children: Kathy Korcheck Martinek (Jeff) and Marjorie Korcheck (Andrew McKeown) and her beloved grandson, Nikos Martinek. She will also be missed by her granddog, Rosie, and her grandkitty, Peli.

A memorial mass celebrating Pat’s life will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 10 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 8560 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060. Following mass, please join the family for light refreshments and a brief reception. Private interment will take place at Mentor Municipal Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Thea Bowman Center, 11901 Oakfield Ave., Cleveland, OH 44105, donate online at: https://www.theabowmancenter.org/#donate; The Holden Arboretum (Holden Forests & Gardens, P.O. Cherished brother to James (Sheila). Uncle of Autumn, Julie and James. Cherished son of  Jeffrey Lillstrung, and the late Ruth Craddock.

Steven was a man with contagious charisma. He was hard working, and dedicated to his family & all of his friends. Steven enjoyed playing poker, and he was a skilled arborist and Jack of all trades. He will be missed by everyone, and will remain in everyone’s hearts forever.

Here is a poem that should be read in memory of Steven:

You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all he’s left.

Your heart will be empty because you can’t see him,
but will be full of the love you shared with him all these years.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember him and only that he’s gone,
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what Steven would want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Born on February 20, 1949, in Salem, Ohio, Pat was known for her kindness, strength and a spirit that was always in motion.  She had a lifelong love of horses – finding a career in thoroughbred racing early on.  Other career endeavors include finance and accounting, real estate and as a jewelry consultant.

Pat didn’t just find joy in the still moments at a racetrack; she also lit up every dance floor she touched.  Whether it was a spontaneous twirl in the kitchen or a night out with friends, Pat danced with the kind of joy that was contagious.  Her love of horses fed her soul, but dancing gave her wings.

Her love reached far beyond horses and music.  She was a fiercely loyal friend, devoted family member, and someone who was always there with compassion in her heart.  Being loved by her was to know the purest form.

She is survived by her sister, Joann Folk; children Douglas (Micki) Merwin, Robert (Jane) Merwin, Lisa (Paul) Szabo; stepchildren Warren (Missy) Thoma, Steven (Tamar) Thoma, Ronald (Kristina) Thoma; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry her love and laughter in their hearts.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Armin Thoma, brothers Ralph Wright Jr. and George V. Wright, and parents Ralph Wright Sr. and Anna Wright.

A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on August 30, starting at 1:00 pm at Esther’s Barn, 2855 S. Union Ave, Alliance, Ohio.  Friends and family are invited to come share stories, memories and even a dance or two – because she would have loved that.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Maplewood of Cuyahoga Falls, Crossroads Hospice, or dementia charity of your choice.

Pat will be remembered for her firecracker personality, loving heart, and contagious laugh.
