After graduating from East Fairmont High School in Fairmont, she attended Fairmont State College where she performed as a majorette, pursued her love of music and earned a degree in music education. It was there that she also met her husband to be, Robert. In later years, she enjoyed waitressing at Cardillos, Town House Restaurant, Chester Diner, and Berkshire Hills Country Club in Chesterland and often reminisced about the friends and acquaintances she met there. Shirley was avid sports fan and enjoyed watching every Cavaliers and Browns game, and rooting for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The family would like to thank the Geauga Couny Department on Aging, Meals on Wheels, and especially Grace Hospice for the wonderful services that they provide. We’d also like to thank neighbor Sandra Prahst for the special care and help provided. Lance Edward McGurer passed away on Wednesday, November 30th 2016, losing his battle with brain cancer. He was born in 1952. At an early age he sustained a life-long paralyzing in- jury, but his willingness to be active saw him learn to scuba dive and play wheelchair basketball. He was an outstanding craftsman and loved woodworking. The outdoors and gardening were a special refuge for him. The majority of what he grew found its way into the kitchen where he was always trying different recipes. His fondness for animals was exhibited by always having a Collie or Newfoundland at his side. While he was not able to play baseball, his love for the game was very visible, serving as Willoughby’s women’s softball league president, coach and manager from 1984 to 2003. In the later years of his mother’s life, he was an inspirational caregiver not only to his mother but to other residents of the Presbyterian home. Lance’s tenacity to “hang tough” over the years will truly be missed by his brother, Dennis (Linda) McGurer; sisters, Patricia Kavalecz (Bill) and Chris Ditto Proto (Jim); and nieces Heather Bright, Janelle Schiecke and Ellen Grimes; nephews Andy McGurer, Ryan McGurer, Pete Kavalecz, Bryan Kavalecz and Kevin Ditto; along with longtime friend and caregiver Kip Compola.
