Shawn Kmetko

Shawn Kmetko passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland, following a four-year battle with cancer.

The years of illness were marked by uncertainty, fear, and endurance. Shawn faced what came with honesty and vulnerability, doing his best to navigate each day as it arrived. He was deeply grateful not only for the care he received, but for the continued research and medical advancements aimed at finding better treatments—and ultimately cures—for genitourinary cancers. He wished to thank his entire medical team for supporting him through a difficult and frightening journey, and for their tireless work that will help others in the future.

Shawn is survived by his beloved wife, Jayme, and his devoted pupper, Scout, who rarely left his side. He is also lovingly remembered by his in-laws, John and Christine Considine; his sister-in-law, Emily Considine (Aaron Johnson); and his favorite niece, Aaliyah Johnson, who brought him comfort and light.

He is also survived by his father, Theodore Kmetko; his sister Peggy Begley and her family; and his sister Sandra Kmetko and her family. While relationships within his family were distant, they remain part of his life’s record.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Else Bachmann, and his beloved pup, Ranger.

Shawn and his family extend heartfelt gratitude to the pain management team—especially Kathy and Lianne—whose compassion and dedication helped ease his suffering over the last nine months. Special thanks are also extended to his home hospice nurses, Katie and Lisa, for their steady, gentle care. The entire staff at the David Simpson Hospice House is deeply appreciated for their kindness, dignity, and compassion during Shawn’s final days.

At Shawn’s request, there will be no services. Condolences may be sent directly to the family.

Shawn will be remembered for his honesty, his love for those closest to him, and the quiet courage it took to keep going, even when he was afraid.
