Norma Jane Dent Cowan passed away at the Hospice of the Western Reserve on August 1. She was born July 18, 1928 in Leesburg, Ohio. Her father, Virgil Dent, was a vocational agriculture teacher and her mother, Marjorie Neill Dent, taught special needs children. She grew up in a home that valued books, education and learning, and she passed that on to her own four children.
Norma received her bachelor's degree at Miami University and her master's degree at the University of Wisconsin. Norma loved literature, Shakespeare, the classics and current fiction and nonfiction. Norma was also deeply engaged in the arts - she loved the theatre, museums and opera.
Norma spent many years teaching English at Euclid Senior High School. Upon her retirement, she and her husband Dick spent several years teaching in Tarsus, Turkey and then on the Navajo Reservation in Sanders, Arizona. Norma and Dick had a rich social circle for the 54 years they lived in Euclid as they were deeply interested in others, and generous and loyal friends.
Norma is survived by her daughter Jane Cowan (Charlie Gore); her daughter Marcia Cowan (Paul Muessig); her grandsons Zak Cowan-Gore and Andrew Cowan-Gore; and her granddaughters Elizabeth Weal, Tessa Weal, and Alexandra Cowan. In addition to her husband Dick, her sons Richard and Robert predeceased her.
A service for Norma will be held at Eastshore Methodist Church, Euclid, on September 8 at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow at the Henn Mansion.
